In a significant development for residents commuting between Lake and Orange Counties, the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) has greenlit the first phase of construction on a new roadway, the Lake/Orange Expressway, also known as State Road 516. This approval, unanimously granted by CFX's governing board, marks the commencement of the first phase of a project that addresses the growing demand for improved transportation infrastructure in one of the fastest-growing regions in Florida.

The 4-lane expressway will include a 429 interchange and extend to US-27 near Lake Louisa State Park. The final project aims to alleviate congestion on existing routes, responding to the increasing demand for efficient transportation as rural farmland transforms into residential areas, impacting commute times significantly.

The road is anticipated to open up opportunities for economic growth and serve as an essential driver for the community. The design of the Lake/Orange Expressway incorporates forward-thinking elements, such as dynamic wireless induction technology to charge electric vehicles while driving along the corridor and a commitment to environmental conservation by providing a wildlife underpass. Further, it will offer a pathway for bikers and pedestrians.

What does this estimated $534 million project mean for homeowners in Lake and Orange counties? This connector will benefit current and future residents with reduced commute times and ease of access to the 429, Disney, and beyond. In addition, enhanced property values are often a result of improved transportation infrastructure, which is ideal for those seeking to sell their home. Estimated completion of the full project is in 2027, construction is slated to commence in Spring of 2024.
