Named after a suburb in Boston, Longwood was homesteaded by Edward Henck in 1873. Henck was the first postmaster and mayor of Longwood. He co-founded the South Florida Railroad connecting the town to Sanford and Orlando, and enabling Longwood to become a big name in citrus and lumber production. Later on, carpenter Josiah Clouser, one of Henck's employees constructed many of the buildings that are still standing in the Longwood historic district. This two block area is home to towering ancient cypress tress which line the brick streets and is a perfect place to soak up the historic charm of the city.
